The team calculates the Carpuccino will do three miles per kilo of ground coffee - the equivalent of about 56 espressos per mile.
The journey will use about 70 kilos of ground coffee which, at supermarket prices of between £13 and £26 a kilo depending on brand and quality, will cost between £910 and £1,820, or between 25 and 50 times the £36 cost of petrol for the journey.

EMI's house producer Emmanuel Odenusi had worked with Fela for many years, defining the sound of Afrobeat. Kayode Salami who produced another couple of tracks on this album also was responsible for the incredible sound of the famous debut LP by Psych-Rock group Ofege. Lagos, a uniquely vibrant, gritty, energetic and sometimes quite dangerous tropical metropolis has always been much more than just a city. A state of mind where third world poverty met the oil boom, where African traditions clashed with Western decadence. Make no mistake, this stuff will have you dance in a feverish rush in no time.

When former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones recently formed a new rock band, the music flowed easily. The struggle: inventing a name for the group.
Between takes in a recording studio, Mr. Jones brainstormed about names with his new band mates, including former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, then checked them online. Their first choice, Caligula, turned up at least seven acts named after the decadent Roman emperor, including a defunct techno outfit from Australia. Eventually the rockers decided on Them Crooked Vultures. The words held no special meaning.
"Every other name is taken," Mr. Jones explains. "Think of a great band name and Google it, and you'll find a French-Canadian jam band with a MySpace page."

Vergessene und beschädigte Arkade-Spiele des sowjetischen Zeitalters werden im neusten Moskauer Museum restauriert, und jetzt ist möglich an diesen Automaten zu spielen und die Atmosphäre des vergangenen Zeitalters zu wieder zu erleben.

The “Bashful” — named after the story-book dwarf in Snow White — was created alongside the Apple II computer series as an extension of the Snow White design language that frog Founder Hartmut Esslinger helped create for the company in 1983. Concepts for this early pre-touch tablet included one with an attached keyboard and one with a floppy disk drive and convenient handle for maximum portability. An attached stylus helped the user interact with the screen. One frog/Apple tablet concept also included an attached phone.

Sie sind gewachsen, aus unzähligen Experimenten, zum Teil über Jahrhunderte. Wir erleben gegenwärtig einen Umbruch wie zu Zeiten Gutenbergs. Darum ist es zu früh, alle Antworten zu verlangen. Es bleibt allein das Experiment: Vielleicht mit Mini-Videoteams, die Mikrofernsehen machen, oder indem man versucht zu verstehen, auf welche Weise viele Mitwirkende ein journalistisches Projekt besser machen können. Oder mit einer Seite, bei der die Leser für die Geschichte spenden, die ihnen am wichtigsten erscheint. Natürlich – auch Stiftungen und freiwillige Geldgeber können und müssen wohl eine Rolle spielen. Experimente können übrigens auch scheitern – deshalb sind es ja Experimente.
Eine entscheidende Frage ist wohl, ob in Zukunft tatsächlich der Qualitätsjournalismus nicht mehr bezahlbar ist, oder ob es allein die großen massenmedialen Verteilungssysteme und die daran hängenden Konzerne sind, die laut eigener Aussage aus Online-Werbeeinnahmen nicht finanziert werden können – während sie häufig alles andere als Qualitätsjournalismus betreiben.

And it’s important to remember that Luke Skywalker didn’t need to survive in his Tauntaun over night, he simply needed a warm place to be until Han had time to build a proper shelter. So, the better question might be, how long did Han have to build a snow shelter until Luke was in serious trouble.

Die Menschwürde zählt, vereinfacht gesagt, zu den Grundrechten. Sie ist ein Abwehrrecht gegen Eingriffe des Staates. Niemand darf von staatlichen Organen zu einem bloßen Objekt staatlichen Handelns gemacht und seines Selbst beraubt werden; sein Leben ist nicht gegen das Leben anderer abwägbar.
Frau von der Leyen münzt das Abwehrrecht gegen den Staat in einen Handlungsauftrag des Staates um. Plötzlich ist die Menschenwürde ein Grund für staatliches Eingreifen – der Staat schützt die Menschenwürde seiner Bürger, indem er Dritten den Mund zuhält oder durch Stoppschilder dafür sorgt, dass sie im Internet nicht mehr gelesen, gesehen und gehört werden können.
Das entfernt sich weit vom eigentlichen Sinn und Zweck des Grundrechts auf Menschenwürde. Wie absurd das Ganze ist, zeigt sich an von der Leyens Aussage, die Bewahrung der Menschenwürde begrenze Demokratie und Meinungsfreiheit auf das “richtige Maß”. So werden aus rechtsstaatlichen Grundelementen, die sich bedingen und ergänzen, Gegensätze.
Die böse Absicht darf mittlerweile unterstellt werden.

Bei der Diskussion über das Netzsperrengesetz in Deutschland hat sich beispielhaft gezeigt, dass Menschen, die es gewohnt sind, mit Computern und Code umzugehen, mit symbolischer Politik nicht zufriedenzustellen sind. Im Netz schafft der Code die Wirklichkeit, und wenn in ihm ein Zeichen nicht stimmt, dann funktioniert er nicht. Es ist daher nicht besonders klug, einer Klientel, die unter diesen Bedingungen lebt und arbeitet, einreden zu wollen, dass Stoppschilder im Internet etwas gegen Kinderpornografie ausrichten können. Es ist noch weniger intelligent, dieser Klientel mit Umfragen und Statistiken begegnen zu wollen, die diese mittels ihrer Kompetenz im Umgang mit informationstechnischen Systemen innerhalb weniger Sekunden demontieren kann. Und es muss Menschen, die es gewohnt sind, ihre eigenen Systeme zu administrieren, zynisch vorkommen, wenn eine Regierung eine zentral verwaltete geheime Sperrliste von Internet-Adressen ausgerechnet unter dem Vorwand der Kinderpornobekämpfung durchsetzt.

But with this summer's biggest, loudest movie, Michael Bay takes us all the way inside Caligari's cabinet. And once you enter, you can never emerge again. I saw this movie two days ago, and I'm still living inside it. Things are exploding wherever I look, household appliances are trying to kill me, and bizarre racial stereotypes are shouting at me.
Transformers: ROTF has mostly gotten pretty hideous reviews, but that's because people don't understand that this isn't a movie, in the conventional sense. It's an assault on the senses, a barrage of crazy imagery. Imagine that you went back in time to the late 1960s and found Terry Gilliam, fresh from doing his weird low-fi collage/animations for Monty Python. You proceeded to inject Gilliam with so many steroids his penis shrank to the size of a hair follicle, and you smushed a dozen tabs of LSD under his tongue. And then you gave him the GDP of a few sub-Saharan countries. Gilliam might have made a movie not unlike this one.
And the true genius of Transformers: ROTF is that Bay has put all of this excess of imagery and random ideas at the service of the most pandering movie genre there is: the summer movie. ROTF is like twenty summer movies, with unrelated storylines, smushed together into one crazy whole. You try in vain to understand how the pieces fit, you stare into the cracks between the narrative strands, until the cracks become chasms and the chasms become an abyss into which you stare until it looks deep into your own soul, and then you go insane. You. Do. Not. Leave. The Cabinet.

Verdanken die schwedischen Piraten einen Großteil ihrer Popularität dem harten Urteil gegen die Betreiber von Pirate-Bay, so haben für die deutsche Netzgemeinde „Zensursula“ und die gegen sie gerichtete Petition maßgeblich dazu beigetragen, dass die Generation C64 zueinander gefunden und erkannt hat, dass sie sehr wohl eine Stimme hat, die auch außerhalb des Netzes wahrgenommen wird. Wenn es die Piraten schafften sollten, sich als parlamentarisches Sprachrohr dieser Diskussion aufzustellen, wird man noch viel von ihnen hören. Die etablierte Politik ist jedenfalls frei vom Verdacht, eine Kehrtwende auf den politischen Feldern zu vollziehen, die die Piraten ins Visier genommen haben.

Das Bedürfnis gelesen zu werden, zu beeinflussen, die eigenen Zeiten in Worte zu fassen, mag in Konflikt geraten mit dem Wunsch, viele Kopien zu verkaufen, muss es aber nicht zwingenderweise. Wenn diese beiden Bedürfnisse in Konflikt geraten, muss das industrielle Interesse zurückgestellt werden und der große intellektuelle Bereich der Künste muss gegen Bedrohungen verteidigt werden.
Das wesentliche Interesse von Künstlern und Autoren, vorausgesetzt sie sind intellektuell und moralisch ernsthaft in dem was sie tun, muss sicher das sein, gelesen zu werden, ihrer Stimme Gehör zu verschaffen in ihrer Generation. Wie dieses Ziel erreicht wird, das heisst, wie man die Leser erreicht, ist aus dieser Perspektive von sekundärem Belang.
Die zunehmende Verteidigung der durch das Internet ausgedehnten Meinungsfreiheit, der immateriellen Bürgerrechte, deren Zeuge wir heute in einem Land nach dem anderen werden, ist der Beginn eines - genauso wie zuletzt im frühen 18. Jahrhundert - Liberalismus, der von einer Technologie getragen wird und daher emanzipiert ist.

GRBs are like super-supernovae, where instead of the explosion moving outward in a spherical shell, the energy is focused into twin beams of cosmic fury. These Blowtorches of Doom could easily set a plane aflame from even hundreds of light years away, and the special effect for it would’ve been a bazillion times cooler in the movie.

Looking at the poll results we see clear evidence of the hack. The first letters of the top 21 finalists in the poll spell out ‘Marblecake, also the game’. Evidence of precision hackery for anyone to see. And yet, Time says they rebuffed all attempts to hack the poll. Quoting from the time article: “TIME.com’s technical team did detect and extinguish several attempts to hack the vote”. Which leads me to wonder whether Time.com is being dishonest or is just plain incompetent. Considering Hanlon’s razor , I have to go with incompetence. (And if you have any doubt about Time’s incompetence, take a close look at the Poll. Notice that Oprah Winfrey and Ratan Tata have the exact same number of votes. That’s because they both shared the same ID in the poll. A vote for either one was a vote for the other. Same goes for Michael Bloomberg and Gustavo Dudamel. If you vote for one, you vote for the other.)
How did the hack happen? I’ve already described in great detail the steps that the loose collective known as ‘Anonymous’ took to hack the poll. This group probed for weaknesses in the poll protocols and wrote autovoters to stuff the ballot box with votes that would put the candidates in the proper order to spell out the Message, adapting as necessary whenever Time adjusted its protocol in a meager attempt to keep the hackers out. But two weeks ago, Time got serious about poll security. They modified the poll so that you needed to prove that you were human (via a captcha) in order to vote.
This instantly shut down all of the autovoters. Anonymous was offline - no longer able to submit thousands of votes per minute. And what’s worse, when the autovoters were shutdown, the Message ‘Marblecake, also the game’ soon decayed into a meaningless “mablre caelakosteghamm”. It seemed that Time.com had won - the Message would not survive the next two weeks of voting. But Anonymous didn’t give up, they considered it a challenge to restore the Message. Here’s how they did it.

The entertainment industry wants to retreat to the comfort of 1996. It was a good year for them. CDs were selling briskly, but no one had figured out how to rip them and turn them into MP3s yet. Music fans were still spending money to buy CD versions of music they owned on LP. DVDs had just been released, and movie fans were spending money to buy DVDs for movies they already owned on VHS.
And most importantly, the laws regulating copyright and technology were almost entirely designed by the entertainment industry. They could write anydamnfoolthing and get it passed in Congress, by the UN, in the EU.
Private agreements with electronics companies guaranteed that all new devices were crippled: Remember the Sony Minidisc players that could record sound digitally, but could only output it on the headphone jack, meaning that you couldn't just record your kid's first words and digitally transfer them to your computer for safe keeping?
1996 is gone, and good riddance.
In 2009, the world is populated by people who no longer believe that "Thou shalt sell media on plastic discs forever" came down off the mountain on two stone tablets. It's populated by people who find the spectacle of companies suing their own customers by the thousands indefensible. It's populated by activists who've figured out that the Internet is worth saving and that the entertainment industry is prepared to destroy it.
And the entertainment industry hasn't figured that out, and that's why they're doomed.

Wir halten Wahlkampf-Taktiken und politischen Populismus für äußerst unangemessen, wenn es um die Bekämpfung des Verbrechens der Gewalt an Minderjährigen gehen soll.

So haben Medienforscher durchauchs “bewiesen”, dass der Konsum gewalthaltiger Fernsehinhalte bei gewalttätigen Menschen höher ist. Sie konnten aber nicht seriös bestimmen, auf welcher Seite die Ursache liegt: Werden Menschen durch TV gewalttätiger? Oder konsumieren gewalttätige Menschen nicht einfach nur mehr gewalthaltige Fernsehsendungen? Oder ganz andere Frage: Liegt es eventuell am sozialen Umfeld, dass gewisse Millieus das eine konsumieren und das andere ausüben? Weist man die Apologeten der Killerspielhysterie auf ihre offensichtlichen Denkfehler hin, dann bekommt man zur Antwort, irgendetwas würden die Computerspiele schon mit Amokläufen in Winnenden zu tun haben, sie wären quasi eine Zutat in der Mixtur, die Menschen zu Gewalttätern macht. Das gilt mit Verlaub gesagt allerdings auch für die kleinstädtische Herkunft vieler Amokläufer. Was soll man da tun? Die Kleinstädte einebnen?

Über 15 Jahre, als Freunde und aus Überzeugung. Pale war und ist mehr für uns, als nur unsere Band. Das wird auch immer so bleiben, auch wenn wir sie jetzt in die Vitrine stellen.
Nachdem wir am 11.9.1993 Pale gründeten, einige Bassisten und Keyboarder verschleißen durften und Dinge erlebt haben, von denen unsere Kinder mal recht schnell genervt sein werden, weil wir immer und immer wieder davon erzählen werden, endet diese wunderbare Zeit mit 4 letzten Konzerten im Mai 2009. Wir haben beschlossen, das Kapitel Pale zu beenden und uns neuen Dingen zu widmen. Nicht im Groll, sondern mit Freude über das Erreichte und Stolz auf die Zeit.
Dazu gehört aber auch, dass wir uns bedanken. Bei all den Leuten, die uns gepudert und getreten haben. Danke für Konfetti und Bierflaschen, für Flaschenbier und Kamillentee. Für das Richtige zur richtigen Zeit. Pale wird immer auch Euch gehören.

Mittlerweile hat Facebook einen Rückzieher gemacht. Nachdem Zuckerberg zuerst die User beruhigen wollte, verkündete er nun eine (vorläufige) Rückkehr von Facebook zu den alten Nutzungsbedingungen. Man habe sehr viele Anfragen und Kommentare zu den neuen Nutzungsbedingungen erhalten. Aufgrund dieses Feedbacks habe man sich entschieden, die alten Nutzungsbedingungen wieder in Kraft zu setzen, bis man die angesprochenen Probleme beseitigt habe. Ein weiteres Fiasko will Zuckerberg offensichtlich vermeiden: Die nächste Version werde eine einschneidende Veränderung gegenüber dem jetzigen Status sein, und sie werde auf all den Prinzipien aufbauen, die er bereits dazu formuliert habe, wie die Nutzer die Informationen über sich kontrollieren und weitergeben könnten. Die neuen Nutzungsbedingungen würden zudem in einer Sprache verfasst, die jeder verstehen könne. Die Facebook-User bekämen zudem die Gelegenheit, zu den neuen Nutzungsbedingungen ihren Input beizusteuern.

Black Mesa (formerly Black Mesa: Source) is a Half-Life 2 total conversion remaking VALVe Software's award-winning PC game, Half-Life. Utilizing the Source engine, Black Mesa will reintroduce the player as Doctor Gordon Freeman, along with the original cast of memorable characters and environments seen in Half-Life. Black Mesa was built and founded on the basis that Half-Life: Source was inadequate as the Source engine port of Half-Life, regardless of the intentions of VALVe Software. As such, Black Mesa was founded to fully reconstruct the Half-Life universe utilizing Source to its fullest potential in terms of art detail, level sizes and code features. This total conversion will not require Half-Life: Source to play - only a copy of any Source Engine game installed on Steam.

Worauf man bei Synchron sonst noch achtet, ist eine reine Sprache. D.h. keine Rachenlaute, nasale Laute, „Spuckeklacker“ etc.. Es wird vornehmlich drauf geachtet, dass so etwas nicht passiert oder dass solche Aufnahmen nicht genommen werden. Doch bei dieser Serie haben wir so etwas in Kauf genommen. Die Slums, die Ghettos, das auf-der-Straße, das sollte nach Möglichkeit authentisch rüberkommt: Dass die Leute halt nicht sehr sauber, sehr fein sprechen. Die können dann auch mal - ich halte jetzt mal ein bisschen die Nase zu - hier und da nasaler sprechen, manchmal Spuckeklacker haben - eben nicht so sauber sprechen, damit es rüberkommt.

Das Hauptproblem sind Reisen: es gibt so viele interessante Themen und viele interessante Personen in ganz Deutschland, die darüber auch gerne was erzählen wollen, ich erhalte auch häufiger Angebote per E-Mail. Doch natürlich wohnen viele von denen nicht in Berlin. Einige Male habe ich ein paar Fernreisen selbst finanziert wenn es wichtig war, doch ist das auf Dauer einfach zu teuer. Sicherlich kann man Podcasts auch via Telefon/Skype machen, aber ich präferiere eine hohe Aufzeichnungsqualität und vor allem den direkten Augenkontakt mit meinen Gesprächspartnern. Es macht einen Großteil dessen aus, was CRE ist. Ergo: die Reisekosten müssen weg.
Und hier ist mein Vorschlag: Ihr spendet mir genug Geld, damit ich mir für das nächste Jahr eine Mobility BahnCard 100 leisten kann und ich werde so oft es geht meinen Arsch aus der großen Stadt herausbewegen und neue CREs in anderen Städten aufnehmen.

Still, I find myself impressed by how close Chinese Democracy comes to fulfilling the absurdly impossible expectation it self-generated, and I not-so-secretly wish this had actually been a triple album. I've maintained a decent living by making easy jokes about Axl Rose for the past 10 years, but what's the final truth? The final truth is this: He makes the best songs. They sound the way I want songs to sound. A few of them seem idiotic at the beginning, but I love the way they end. Axl Rose put so much time and effort into proving that he was super-talented that the rest of humanity forgot he always had been. And that will hurt him. This record may tank commercially. Some people will slaughter Chinese Democracy, and for all the reasons you expect. But he did a good thing here.
